Mambo motto: If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth overdoing. So when we were given the choice of shooting the 2012 Goddess campaign in the Mambo carpark (after clearing away 5 years of accumulated junk), or New York, any serious reservations about the “financial wisdom of this shoot” from our accounts department were only considered for as long as it took to cancel the papers and find someone to mind the cat. Travellers around Sydney might have noticed an outbreak of colourful flags currently cheering up our usually monotone city streets. The flags, commissioned by the Sydney City Council, have been designed by MAMBO artist, Chrissy Lau to celebrate Chinese New Year. They also feature in an ad campaign on SBS television. So popular have the flags become that Chrissy has recently picked up several new stalkers … followers, on Twitter including, Sydney’s Lord Mayor, Clover Moore.

If you skate and have been to NYC you might know this park. We were in town recently for the launch of Mambo in the US. We found this nicely contoured slab of concrete after the manager of our hotel asked us to take (Mambo skater) Brad McDermott outside “to play” after he’d jumped a luggage trolley in the hotel lobby. The park is in the Chinatown district, in Brooklyn, and when we walked through the gate the mood became, “unfriendly”. The local skaters were unhappy about having to share their park with a bunch of out-of-town drop-ins with a camera. That was, until Brad started skating. Suddenly, mood changed, abuse stopped and, applause. That boy can skate.

Mambo surfer, Blake Thornton rides waves for a living. The ocean is his office. Last week he was working at his local, ‘Dunny Bowl’, at Maroubra. And the only thing he needed to punch, in lieu of a clock, was an idiot in a red trucker’s cap who dropped in on him half way through the session.

Most surf/street companies would call up an agency and throw a large amount of cash at a handful of models to help advertise new product but when you’re got the cast of Clerks huddled around a light table in the studio, upstairs you’d be mad not to use that money to fill up the bar fridge. These are the people who design the Mambo clothes you wear. And this is how they get to work … when they get to work.

You tear open the embossed envelope from Vogue and there’s an invitation requesting the pleasure of your company aboard a luxury pontoon in the middle of Sydney Harbour, surrounded by models and scarfing lobster canapés and alcohol you can only normally afford after an insurance payout. What can you say? “Sorry, can’t make it. We’re having the cat de-sexed on Thursday”. Bugger the cat (not literally)!

The party, co-hosted by Vogue and Invisible Zinc was themed around the 2012 Zinc colour palette. Mambo was one of four Australian designers, with Anna & Boy, Rachael Gilbert, and Sambags selected to create an exclusive one-off design for the event. Mambo ‘Goddess’, Jessica Gomes wore a lens-fogging, white and lemon print maxi by Mambo designer, Brigid Maloney. We also provided all attendees with a Mambo Goddess/Elisa Mazzone print singlet. Hot and very cool at the same time.

Anyone can up-end half a flagon of Asti Spumante, whip off their tracksuit and run naked around the salad bar at their local leagues club bistro but the real challenge is to have fun while you’re still wearing a pair of pants, at least.

And that’s the challenge we set ourselves when we ran a hose into the boardroom, moved the bar fridge and pointed our camera at a sample of this summer’s Men’s range. Go ahead … try this at home.
